About this service

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measures bone mineral density at the hip and spine to screen for osteopenia and osteoporosis. The radiation dose is very low.

What to expect

You lie on a padded table while a scanning arm passes over your hips and spine. The scan is painless and takes about 10–15 minutes.

Preparation

No fasting needed. Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before. Tell us if you have had recent contrast imaging or barium studies.

Results and reports

A sub-specialised radiologist will read your scan and send a comprehensive report directly to your referring GP or specialist the next business day. Your referrer will discuss the results with you at your follow-up appointment.

Bulk billing

Most bone densitometry examinations are bulk-billed for eligible patients. Our team will confirm any out-of-pocket costs when you book.
