About this service

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to generate detailed images of the body, providing diagnostic information that other imaging cannot.

What to expect

A scan can take up to 15 minutes and is divided into four to six sequences. You wear a hospital gown; headphones protect your hearing during the loud procedure. An emergency button keeps you in contact with the radiographer at all times. A coil is placed over the area being imaged. You may feel some warmth — this is normal and monitored.

Preparation

Bring previous imaging records. Complete a safety questionnaire on arrival. Leave valuables at home and avoid makeup or hairspray. Tell us about tattoos, skin patches, pregnancy or claustrophobia. Continue your regular medications unless told otherwise. For abdominal or pelvic scans you may need to fast.

Results and reports

A sub-specialised radiologist will read your scan and send a comprehensive report directly to your referring GP or specialist the next business day. Your referrer will discuss the results with you at your follow-up appointment.

Bulk billing

Most mri examinations are bulk-billed for eligible patients. Our team will confirm any out-of-pocket costs when you book.
