Ultrasound at Focus Radiology

About this service

Ultrasound is a safe, painless diagnostic imaging procedure that does not use radiation. High-frequency sound waves generate real-time images of soft tissues — muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, abdominal and pelvic organs. A radiologist reviews every study and provides a comprehensive report.

What to expect

A sonographer welcomes you, confirms your details and explains the procedure. You lie on the scanning bed, water-based gel is applied, and the transducer moves across your skin while images are acquired. You may be asked to change position or hold your breath. Most studies take up to 30 minutes.

Preparation

Abdominal: fast for six hours. Renal and female pelvic: attend with a comfortably full bladder — empty one hour before, then drink one litre of water. Pregnancy, MSK, breast, thyroid and testicular ultrasound: no preparation needed.

Results and reports

A sub-specialised radiologist will read your scan and send a comprehensive report directly to your referring GP or specialist the next business day. Your referrer will discuss the results with you at your follow-up appointment.

Bulk billing

Most ultrasound examinations are bulk-billed for eligible patients. Our team will confirm any out-of-pocket costs when you book.
